THE VALCAVASIA
THE CHARM OF A VALLEY RICH IN HISTORY AND BEAUTY
The wide Cavasia Valley, or Valcavàsia, which gently descends from the southern slopes of Monte Grappa towards the Piave River, is an area of soothing beauty and rich in historical information and prehistoric finds. From 500 BC approximately, the valley was most probably inhabited by tribes of Germanic origin, the Celts.
WONDERS IN THE SURROUNDINGS
THE GREAT WAR, MASTERPIECES OF CANOVA AND THE JOY OF LIVING
POSSAGNO
Bordered by the mountains to the north and south and surrounded by greenery, Possagno since the end of the 18th century is linked to the name of the famous sculptor Antonio Canova, among whose works the Canovian Temple stands out, a magnificent neoclassical church designed inspired by the Pantheon in Rome, and the Gipsoteca canoviana, a rich collection of casts and plaster casts at the artist's house.
ASOLO
Defined by Giosuè Carducci “city of a hundred horizons”, Asolo is part of the Club of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy. The symbol of Asolo is the Rocca which dominates the landscape. Do not miss the historic center with the sixteenth-century fountain, the Castle, the ancient Cathedral and, inside, the beautiful “Assunta” by Lorenzo Lotto. Also worth visiting is the Civic Museum, inside the fifteenth-century Palazzo della Ragione.
CASTELCIES
THE CHURCH OF ST MARTIN
Enchanting Romanesque church surrounded by hills and woods. The foundation is probably from the Lombard period, if not Gothic. A squared and carved stone, preserved in the church, is considered the oldest document of the Treviso area. Dated 2nd century BC. it bears a Rhaetian inscription and on the opposite side the corresponding inscription in archaic Latin. The 16th century frescoes by Marco da Mel are beautiful.
CORNUDA
THE FORTRESS
The site, where an ancient fortress once stood, is currently occupied by the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Rocca. Fortress of which some stones remain reused in two buildings near the apse. The fortress of Cornuda is one of the most exceptional observation points in north-eastern Veneto: from Valsugana and Bassano to the Piave plain, to the Quero pass and, even further, to the entire Quartier del Piave, and in favourable conditions, the Venice lagoon.
THE TIPOTECA
Extremely interesting is the Tipoteca di Cornuda. A museum of three thousand square meters in which woodcut, lithography, chalcography, music engraving and still typographic press survive. Here the story of the typographer's profession is told from the discovery of materials, passing through movable type printing, Gutemberg and the technical experiments of the 20th century thanks to the presence of unpublished collections that narrate the journey of the cultural revolution brought about by the invention of printing.
